In 2020, StudyPerth commissioned ACIL Allen to quantify the economic importance of international education to the WA economy. Since the completion of this study in April 2020, the international education sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, as governments around the world close their borders to the movement of people to protect the health and wellbeing of their citizens. In order to understand the overall impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the international education sector, ACIL Allen was engaged by StudyPerth to provide an update on the economic contribution of the international students to the WA economy in the 2020 calendar year, to compare to the pre-pandemic year in 2019. ACIL Allen was also asked to model the contribution of international students on the WA economy based on an assumed path back to pre-COVID-19 student numbers in Western Australia.
